Second Grade-Week of 9-21-20 to 9-25-20

As salaamu alaikum Second Grade Families,

In shaa Allah, you are in the best of health and Iman. Last week, second graders worked on new spelling words and grammar, shared reading, math, writing, and social studies. Second graders did a wonderful job on their first spelling test. They will be given new spelling words every Monday. They will practice their spelling words at school but I ask that they practice at home as well to prepare for a spelling test every Friday, In shaa Allah. I had included suggestions of ways to practice spelling words in the orange folder.

We read a non-fiction text for shared reading. We learned about some features of a non-fiction such as the table of contents, glossary, chart among other information. Students are asked to read one book every day on Epic or Kids a-z website at home for reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. I assigned some books on both websites. Please choose one book every day from the assigned books. We are learning about community in social studies and I assigned books on Epic about community. Have your student read books about community this week and any other books of their choice.

In math, as we continue to move forward with our lessons in the textbook, we reviewed what makes a ten, and explored teen numbers using math mountains, and solved word problems to find a missing number. Please have your student practice one or two math skills every day on IXL which takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Ma shaa Allah, we have good writers in second grade. Students wrote about how a friend helped them. We used a graphic organizer to brainstorm three or more ideas on Monday, chose one idea from the brainstorm to write three details on Tuesday, wrote an introduction and closing for the topic on Wednesday, and edited and published our writing on Thursday and Friday. In shaa Allah, we will continue to write this way every week on different topics.

On Friday, we explored the seesaw website a bit. Second graders are excited to use seesaw on their iPad or laptop. For the time being, we will not use seesaw regularly. I will send a message on Remind if I assign anything on seesaw. Your student's sign in information is in the orange folder for seesaw. Please use that information sign in to help your student complete a short assignment I sent for next week as practice on how to use seesaw. Only complete assignments I send and nothing more. Some students are sending me pictures and messages which we did as practice only in class on Friday. We will not need an iPad in class until further notice. I will inform you the next time we need an iPad in class again.

Please send a water bottle every day with your child as we do not have a water fountain. Our snack time is at 10:15, send a healthy snack from home for your student. Call or message me if you have any questions or concerns. Remember to complete the Covid 19 survey on Sunday. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
